ON THE ROAD IN '68

Mike Raab

THE LEGENDARY TRADE WINDS NIGHTCLUB was one of the two live music venues in the Hudson Valley that we played at on a regular basis. The other was the Buccaneer on the border of Poughkeepsie and Pleasant Valley. Both were owned by the Pietrzak brothers, Frank and Tony.

Our guitarist Jack Dougherty was cleaning out his mothers attic recently and came across these photos. Since they were shot as slides and not prints, most of them held up pretty well. We will post a few more of these rare pieces of Bandit memorabilia in the near future.

THE RED DOG IN BURLINGTON, VERMONT was on the second floor overtop a taxi stand. Occasionally we would be blasting away at a Hendrix tune and when the last note was played, we would get the taxi cab calls through our amplifiers. It's unusual when "PURPLE HAZE WAS IN MY EYES!" is followed by "pick up the old lady with the bag on the corner of Church and Third."

Incidentally, the Red Dog was located on a diagonal from Nectars, the club that decades later would become famous for a band that got their start there - Phish.

LATE BREAKING BANDITS NEWS... In the current edition of "Great Rock Drummers of the Sixties" by Bob Cianci, our own Joe Scalfari is recognized and listed. Says the abbreviated bio:

"Joe played with the Jelly Bean Bandits who recorded one obscure and collectible album for Mainstream Records in 1968. The group broke up and re-formed in 2002, playing some gigs in upstate New York. They recorded their second disc that same year and have an active website."

Congratulations Joe, and take a bow!
